Let me start by saying "Aladin is the best special effects film made in India yet-Oct 31, 2009." Art direction, combined with cinematography and special effects have created a unique city called "Khwaish"- Dilli say thoda oopar, Chandigarh say thoda idhar, bas wahi, kahin... :-) Cinematography is excellent with the camera getting up close and personal with the characters. I have said this before that many movies are half-spoilt due to the camera being too far from the faces and not capturing that emotion of the face.

Aladin's story is well known so if someone complains about the lack of story then they better stay at home. Starcast is apt, nothing more nothing less was needed. Director Sujoy Ghosh did a good job there. Don't need to say anything about Amitabh (Genius the genie), he is the best and shines as the genie whether it is a light(most of them) scene OR a serious one. His face just conveys it all. Beautiful! Ritesh Deshmukh has improved. In his role of Aladin who is bullied by his friends, he does manage to get sympathy of the viewer. He is never made into a Hero from zero by the director except when needed in a small-dose, which is great. Things are kept realistic inside a fantasy. After-all Aladin is a fantasy. Jasmine(Jacqueline) is used nicely and does a good job in whatever small little role that she has. And then there is Sanjay Dutt(Magician, Rrrrring Master). He works well as the villain here as he usually does. He deserves a special mention as the singer here with the "Giri-giri .." song. I should say it here, if I have not said it before, that there Sanjay Dutt is sort of second in line after Amitabh in terms of singing talent.

There is one spot almost at half-time or so with the "Sasur-ghar jaana" song where it seemed unnecessary but may have been put here to please the masses. Not sure, just a guess. Maybe it was unnecessary Or just boring. I think it could have been yanked from the film. I liked the group song at the end of the film which is "Bachke re bachke re..."

One more thing, the makeup for Genius/Amitabh and Sanjay Dutt is well-done including the costumes and facial hair, especially the curled up beard of the rrringmaster. I think there could have been more action sequences in the film to make use of more special effects but as it is, the film is nicely concise and to the point. The aesthetics of set design including the colors of the walls, alleys, buildings and the city nicely gel. They did a good job of mixing the real-life sets with the ones using special effects.

Overall, I would have given it a 7 out of 10 due to the lack of punch or want of some more action sequences but given that I am impressed with other elements of film-making, I am giving it an 8 out of 10. Note that this is a film that is in the league of the Hollywood films in terms of special effects and technology superiority. It is impressive.

And for all those people nay-saying about how aladin just does not work for them as a film and expecting that the whole story should revolve around 3 wishes, they need to first understand that there is a creative freedom that the director has and he is the decider as to what film he is making. I would say, take your kids with you and see their eyes light-up i.e. be like a kid before making a comment. i.e. These are probably the same people who can look at a Harry Potter and say wow! but when it is made locally, they are afraid accept the goodness.
